To work with families amidst a divorce where parents are able to put their children’s interest first drew me to Collaborative Law. I have witnessed the damage done to children and their families when divorce not only ends the marriage but wrecks havoc on all familiar relationships for years to come. I want to work in a system that offers another way, a better way for all involved especially for the kids.
My goal as a child specialist is to help the parents develop a durable, mutually agreed upon parenting plan that recognizes the ages, needs and developmental stages of their children. Understanding that children grieve the loss of the marriage, their families as they knew it and fear the unknown future can help parents move out of their own conflict and put themselves in their children’s shoes.
I love my work. It’s exciting to see families work together even as they make plans for separate lives. Yes, there is pain and no, people don’t always like one another. Divorce is one of the most challenging experiences you can go through, but it can be done with integrity and looking to a future where each parent can share in meaningful experiences for their children.

Collaborative Law Child Specialist and Mediator
Family Law GAL/Parenting Evaluator
Certified Family and Co-Parenting Mediator
Founder, Compass Collaborative
Innovative, pragmatic, eclectic and visionary are the words colleagues use to describe Jack Mahler. By his own admission, his more than 30-year career has never fit the mold. His diverse background includes working in family law, family courts, children’s mental health and social work, as well as a lifelong passion for community service and volunteering.
Throughout his career, Jack has reinvented himself several times, from running a non-profit alcohol and drug treatment center to serving on more than 1,000 family law cases as part of the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Program and in private practice. Jack retired from public service in 2005, eager to help children through the growing field of collaborative law. Today Jack’s private practice focuses around three core services: collaborative law child specialist and mediator, family law guardian ad litem (GAL)/parenting evaluator and certified family and co-parenting mediator.
Always looking for ways to innovate and improve, Jack saw the need for a focused, organized collaborative law pod that better served the needs of divorcing couples and families, and in 2008, he formed Compass Collaborative. While Jack’s interests and skills continue to evolve, what remains constant is his commitment to serving the best interests of children and representing those who so badly need a voice.

Coach, Mediator and Child Therapist
Traditional thinking about divorce used to be of the all-or-northing kind. Either you are married, and you shared everything, or you are divorced, and you fight to keep it all. Even when it harms the emotional wellbeing and financial security of your child. There is an alternative. The “responsible divorce.”
The “responsible divorce” is about balance. You understand that there are conflicting needs; and you do your best to balance them. These common goals include making divorce less painful on yourselves, keeping your dignity, and saving money that will be wasted in high conflict divorce….
If you have children, there is an even stronger interest: forming a strong parental alliance is essential to raising healthy children.
As an experienced Family Mediator, licensed attorney, and licensed clinical therapist, I am uniquely qualified to serve as your mediator, child specialist, or divorce coach.
If you are divorced, and the conflict continues over unresolved issues or disputes over children, let me help you mediate a truce through a child focused mediation process, which reduces conflict and encourages cooperation.
I have over 25 years of experience helping families reduce the trauma of divorce and explore new possibilities.
